You make some excellent points, Shailvi. Nowadays, especially in multicultural cities, we have moved way beyond commonplace names like Barbara and Michael. It is incumbent upon each of us to try our best to pronounce other people's names properly.
I especially appreciate the example you used - Govind - because it made me realize that I had been pronouncing it with a "v" instead of with a "w" all these years.
In fact, this is one of the confusing aspects of pronunciation that I hear among people whose origins are India - sometimes the "v" and "w" get switched up, and sometimes not.
