Frank Lloyd Wright saw the same problem with using the word "American" to describe people from the USA. He invented a word in an attempt to overcome this shortfall: Usonian. Unfortunately, it never quite took off. I wouldn't say that I am singlehandedly trying to bring it back, but I try to throw it into my writing whenever I can.
