Outsider in My Own Country (Part 6 of 13)
What it’s like to be different from my of my co-citizens in many ways
6. Popular culture and entertainment
“The United States has become a place where entertainers and professional athletes are mistaken for people of importance.”
Robert A. Heinlein
I have never felt that I was missing out on anything by not being clued into popular culture such as sports, movies, TV, and the private lives of the people who inhabit those worlds. If I am in the company of others who are talking about something I know nothing about, I am fine with just waiting until we get to a topic to which I can contribute.
I can walk you through the most common forms of entertainment and give my assessment of how I approach each one differently than most people I encounter.
Reading
I prefer reading non-fiction. I enjoy reading and learning about the world, the people in it, and how each of us manages to get along in our own way on this planet that we share. True experiences such as these have a much greater pull for me than imagined worlds.
