I have definitely noticed that at French meals there are no bread plates. Bread is placed on the table. People tear a piece off the baguette and place it on the table next to their plates. Hence, lots of crumbs on the table.

It takes a bit of getting used to, doesn't it? And it's symbolic of delicious meals shared with loved ones.
