I feel neither shame nor pride about aspects of my life over which I have never had control.

The place where I was born is just a fact of life. Even if somebody from the same country acts in a shameful or embarrassing way, the behavior reflects on that person, not on me.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that our country should happen to elect an ignorant know-nothing egotistical maniac as president who said and did things to embarrass himself. I know that this is far-fetched, but it could happen. Anyway, if a person like that said or did something stupid, I believe that his behavior would reflect on HIM, not on me.
