Insight into life for gay men in Bangladesh

Since my arrival in Bangladesh, I have met three gay men who have told me about their day-to-day lives. Their individual economic status is quite different, but they, unfortunately, share their experience of being isolated and concerned about other people knowing who they are.

I will maintain their anonymity by referring to them as X, Y, and Z.

X and I have been in email contact for four months. We have had the opportunity to be in touch during this time, but did not exchange much personal information online. It wasn’t until we met in person that I found out more about him.

In Part 1 of this three-part series, I referred to X as Manik, a fictitious name. As it turns out, X is a famous entertainer in Bangladesh. He is from a village and prefers village life, but must live in Dhaka because of his career. He lives alone and frequently has friends and family visit from the village.

X is concerned about others finding out about his sexuality because he says it would damage his career. For that reason, he tries to date foreigners who do not know who he is.
